The Victoria Falls constitutes one of the most spectacular natural wonders of the world. The Local people call it “Mosi-oa-Tunya” – the smoke that thunders and the Falls are remarkable.
There is a magic about them manifested in the towering column of spray when the river is high, the thunder of the falling water, the terrifying abyss and tranquil lagoons upstream in which hippo and deadly crocodiles lurk.
The Victoria falls is 1 708 meters wide, making it the largest curtain of water in the world. It drops between 90m and 107m into the Zambezi Gorge and an average of 550,000 cubic metres of water plummet over the edge every minute.

The town of Victoria Falls grew from the demands of tourists, providing hotels and restaurants to visitors heading to the falls and the nearby national parks. David Livingstone’s fantastic stories about the falls attracted many European adventurers and travellers to this once remote place. It resembled an American frontier town in the late 19th century, with bars, stores and gambling dens. Despite an outbreak of malaria and blackwater fever that briefly turned Victoria Falls into a ghost town, the town continued to grow through the 20th century.
The bridge across the gorge was built as part of Cecil John Rhodes’s ambitious, but never realised, Cape to Cairo railway in 1902. Though its name is Victorian, the town boasts some fine examples of Edwardian architecture, including the elegant Victoria Falls Hotel, built in 1905, with its decidedly colonial air, and the Victoria Falls Station, where the Bulawayo-Victoria Falls train arrives.

Sometimes the rainbow will rise from the gorge to somewhere above the falls depending on the position of the moon. The Victoria Falls, a world heritage site, is currently the only one which has a full lunar rainbow.

The Niagara Falls used to have one but no longer because of the bright lights of the New York city.

Victoria Falls National Park

The national parks contain abundant wildlife including sizable populations of elephant, buffalo, giraffe, zebra, and a variety of antelope. Lion and leopard are only occasionally seen. Vervet monkeys and baboons are common. The river above the falls contains large populations of hippopotamus and crocodile. Elephants cross the river in the dry season at particular crossing points. Klipspringers and clawless otters can be glimpsed in the gorges, but they are mainly known for 35 species of raptors. The Taita Falcon, Black Eagle, Peregrine Falcon and Augur Buzzard breed there. Above the falls, herons, Fish Eagles and numerous kinds of waterfowl are common.

Victoria Falls is an absolute must and a place to be visited by everyone at some point in their life. Yes its full of adrenalin junkies and yes you get hastled (like in every African city or town) but behind all this, the people and the place are absolutely beautiful. If you’re going to stay in town then the Royal Livingstone is in our view the only good place to stay but explore up or down the river and youll find out what really makes this place so special.
